Personnummer (Swedish personal identity number)
Issuer: Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency), assigned after folkbokföring (population registration)
Wait time: Typically 4-8 weeks after a complete application, longer in peak periods
Evidence: Skatteverket correspondence or a registerutdrag (population-register extract) showing the personnummer
Most issuing banks will not open a personal account without a personnummer. Coordination-number holders face significant restrictions — see the FAQ.
Swedish-issued identity document (preferred)
Accepted documents: Swedish passport, Swedish national ID card issued by the Swedish Police, Swedish driving licence, or Skatteverket id-kort
Function: Strongest evidentiary KYC document for the issuing bank; accepted directly without additional attestation
The Skatteverket id-kort is the most common Swedish-issued ID option for newcomers without a Swedish passport. Application fee is 400 SEK paid via Bankgiro 389-0100.
registerutdrag
Foreign passport + registerutdrag (alternative)
Function: Acceptable alternative KYC at most issuing banks, paired with a registerutdrag from Skatteverket showing the personnummer
Registerutdrag cost: Free; obtainable via Skatteverket service centre, telephone, or post
Process note: May trigger an in-person branch visit instead of the fully digital flow
Swedbank's FAQ documents the registerutdrag + foreign-ID path explicitly: registerutdrag från Skatteverket som visar ditt personnummer samt en godkänd utländsk id-handling.
Smartphone with NFC reader
Minimum OS: iOS 16 or later, or Android 9 or later (from March 2026 per the announced BankID protocol change)
Function: Required for the BankID säkerhetsapp activation and for the digital onboarding flow at issuing banks that read the foreign passport chip via NFC
If your phone lacks NFC, Swedbank's FAQ states you will need to visit a bank branch in person for help obtaining Mobilt BankID.

Function: One-time code entered into the BankID säkerhetsapp during activation
Validity: Bank-specific window; request a fresh code if the issued one has expired

Neobanks such as Revolut, Wise, and N26 are not BankID issuers — confirm the bank you choose is on the Finansiell ID-Teknik consortium list before booking the appointment.
