# Enrolling in the Rentenversicherung in Germany

**Country:** 🇩🇪 Germany
**Last verified:** 2026-05-12
**Estimated time:** Automatic at first hire; voluntary or self-employed registration ~30-60 minutes
**Cost:** €0 (enrolment); contributions 18.6% of contributory wage

## Required documents

- **Tax identification number** *(Steueridentifikationsnummer)*
  - Where to get: Issued by the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern after Anmeldung
  - Required: Provide to your employer at hire
  - Cost: Free
  - _Note:_ Not the same as the pension Versicherungsnummer; both are needed by the employer.
- **Identity document** *(Personalausweis or Aufenthaltstitel)*
  - Required: Original; Personalausweis for German/EU nationals, Aufenthaltstitel for non-EU residents
  - Cost: Free at this step
  - _Note:_ Confirms identity to the employer at hire; not transmitted to DRV by the employee.
- **Krankenkasse membership confirmation** *(Mitgliedsbescheinigung)*
  - Where to get: From your statutory or private Krankenkasse after enrolment
  - Required: Provide to employer for the joint social-insurance filing
  - Cost: Free
- **Existing Versicherungsnummer (if previously assigned)** *(Versicherungsnummernachweis)*
  - Where to get: Earlier letter from Deutsche Rentenversicherung; replaces the legacy Sozialversicherungsausweis
  - Required: Only if you were insured in Germany before — the same number is reused
  - Cost: Free
  - _Note:_ Per Deutsche Rentenversicherung, the Versicherungsnummer fundamentally never changes.

## Costs

- **First-time assignment of Versicherungsnummer and Versicherungsnummernachweis:** 0 EUR — No enrolment fee. Deutsche Rentenversicherung's service hotline is also marked 'Kostenloses Servicetelefon' (free of charge).
- **Statutory contribution rate (Beitragssatz, employed route):** 0 EUR — 18.6% of contributory wage in total — employee 9.3% and employer 9.3% (Deutsche Rentenversicherung). Contributions apply up to the annual Beitragsbemessungsgrenze set by the Federal Government; verify the current-year figure on the DRV publications page.
- **Self-employed compulsory contribution (§ 2 SGB VI):** 0 EUR — Full 18.6% is paid by the insured; DRV: 'Insured self-employed persons and voluntarily insured persons have to pay their entire contributions themselves.'
- **Voluntary insurance contribution (§ 7 SGB VI):** 0 EUR — Voluntarily insured persons choose a contribution between the statutory minimum and maximum published annually by DRV.
- **Mini-job pension contribution (§ 168 SGB VI):** 0 EUR — Employer pays 15% of the mini-job wage (5% for mini-jobs in private households). The employee tops up the difference unless they file a Befreiung von der Versicherungspflicht.

## Steps

### 1. Identify which enrolment route applies to you

- Employed worker (§ 1 SGB VI): employer initiates; no action required from you beyond providing your hire documents
- Voluntary insurance (§ 7 SGB VI): applicant initiates with Deutsche Rentenversicherung directly
- Self-employed in a § 2 SGB VI occupation (artists/publicists via KSVG, teachers without employees, midwives, certain master craftsmen): applicant initiates with Deutsche Rentenversicherung directly
- Mini-job employee (geringfügige Beschäftigung, § 168 SGB VI): employer initiates via Minijob-Zentrale; you may file a Befreiung von der Versicherungspflicht to opt out of the own-contribution top-up

> **Tip:** Most readers fall under the employed route; the remaining steps describe that flow primarily, with variant notes for the other three routes.

### 2. Provide your hire documents to the employer

- (Applicant) Hand over your Steueridentifikationsnummer, identity document (Personalausweis or Aufenthaltstitel) and Mitgliedsbescheinigung from your chosen Krankenkasse
- (Applicant) If you held a Versicherungsnummer from earlier employment in Germany, provide the existing Versicherungsnummernachweis so the same number is reused

> **If this fails:** If you cannot locate a prior Versicherungsnummer, Deutsche Rentenversicherung can look it up via the free service line 0800 1000 4800 or through Mein Kundenportal.

### 3. Employer files the social-insurance registration *(DEÜV-Meldung)*

- (Employer) Files a single DEÜV-Meldung through the Datenstelle der Träger der Rentenversicherung covering pension, health, long-term care and unemployment insurance simultaneously
- (Employer) Receives the Versicherungsnummer back via the Datenstelle's response message (Rückmeldung)

> **If this fails:** Deutsche Rentenversicherung: 'Kann jedoch keine Versicherungsnummer durch die Datenstelle übermittelt werden, hat der Beschäftigte den Versicherungsnummernachweis unverzüglich vorzulegen oder der Arbeitgeber hat die Vergabe einer Versicherungsnummer zu beantragen.' Either produce your existing Versicherungsnummernachweis or the employer applies for assignment of a Versicherungsnummer for you.

### 4. Deutsche Rentenversicherung assigns the Versicherungsnummer

- (DRV) Assigns a Versicherungsnummer to first-time workers; reuses the existing number for anyone previously insured
- (DRV) Returns the number to the employer via the Datenstelle der Träger der Rentenversicherung response

> **Tip:** The Versicherungsnummer is the same artefact people commonly call the Sozialversicherungsnummer (SVN). It is lifelong: 'The insurance number is normally assigned when the person first starts work and fundamentally never changes' (Deutsche Rentenversicherung).

### 5. Receive the Versicherungsnummernachweis by post *(Versicherungsnummernachweis)*

- (DRV) Mails the paper Versicherungsnummernachweis (formerly Sozialversicherungsausweis) to your registered address
- (Applicant) Store the certificate as a permanent record; present the Versicherungsnummer to every future employer at job change

> **Tip:** Deutsche Rentenversicherung: 'Bei Aufnahme Ihrer ersten Beschäftigung stellen wir Ihnen einen Versicherungsnummernachweis (Sozialversicherungsausweis) aus. Er enthält Ihre Versicherungsnummer, Ihren Vornamen und Nachnamen. […] Die Versicherungsnummer müssen Sie auch bei einem Jobwechsel beim neuen Arbeitgeber angeben.'

_Useful phrases:_
- "Hier ist meine Versicherungsnummer." (heer ist my-neh fer-zikh-eh-roongs-noo-mer) — Here is my insurance number. — use when Giving your number to a new employer at job change

### 6. Voluntary or self-employed compulsory route — register with DRV directly

_Applies when: Only if you are not in the employed or mini-job route_

- (Applicant) Contact Deutsche Rentenversicherung via the free service line 0800 1000 4800 (Mon–Thu 08:00–19:00, Fri 08:00–15:30), via Mein Kundenportal, or at a regional Auskunfts- und Beratungsstelle
- (Applicant) Submit the freiwillige Versicherung application (V0060-class form, available via the DRV forms-search page) together with your identity document and any prior Versicherungsnummer
- (DRV) Confirms eligibility under § 7 SGB VI (aged 16+, not otherwise compulsorily insured, before the cut-off for a bindingly granted full old-age pension) or under § 2 SGB VI for self-employed compulsory routes
- (DRV) Assigns the Versicherungsnummer (if you do not already have one) and confirms the contribution schedule
- (Applicant) Pays the chosen contribution monthly — for self-employed compulsory and voluntary insurance, the full 18.6% is paid by the insured

> **If this fails:** Self-employed persons in a § 2 SGB VI occupation should register within roughly three months of taking up the qualifying activity. Late registration does not waive the contribution liability — it accrues from the start of the activity, and DRV may collect back contributions.

### 7. Clarify your insurance account when prompted *(Kontenklärung)*

- (Applicant) Check your Versicherungsverlauf in Mein Kundenportal once Deutsche Rentenversicherung writes to you about Kontenklärung
- (Applicant) Submit supporting documents for any missing periods — school, college, university, parenting, care or service time — so the Rentenkonto is complete

> **Tip:** Deutsche Rentenversicherung: 'You should clarify your account at an early stage in order to fill in any gaps such as times spent at school, college or university.' Kontenklärung is not blocking for current employment but protects the future pension calculation.

## FAQ

### Do I need to enrol in the Rentenversicherung myself when I start my first job?

No. Your employer files the social-insurance registration (DEÜV-Meldung) at first hire. Deutsche Rentenversicherung assigns the Versicherungsnummer 'when the person first starts work' and posts the Versicherungsnummernachweis to you by mail.

### Is the Versicherungsnummer the same as the Sozialversicherungsnummer (SVN)?

Yes. Deutsche Rentenversicherung calls it the Versicherungsnummer; in everyday German it is commonly called the Sozialversicherungsnummer (SVN). The paper certificate carrying the number is the Versicherungsnummernachweis — renamed from Sozialversicherungsausweis on 1 January 2023. Older Sozialversicherungsausweis documents remain valid.

### What is the current contribution rate?

Deutsche Rentenversicherung publishes the Beitragssatz as 18.6% of contributory wage. Employed workers pay half (9.3%) and the employer pays the other half (9.3%). The annual Beitragsbemessungsgrenze caps the assessment base — verify the current-year figure on the DRV publications page.

### Does my Versicherungsnummer change if I switch employer?

No. Deutsche Rentenversicherung states the Versicherungsnummer 'fundamentally never changes.' You give the same number to each new employer at job change.

### I am self-employed — am I covered automatically?

Only if your activity is in the § 2 SGB VI list (artists and publicists under the KSVG, teachers without employees, midwives, certain master craftsmen and similar). Those persons are compulsorily insured and must register with DRV directly. Everyone else may take up freiwillige Versicherung under § 7 SGB VI.

### Can I insure myself voluntarily if I am not employed?

Yes, if you are aged 16 or older and not otherwise compulsorily insured. § 7 (1) SGB VI extends this to Germans whose habitual residence is abroad. Voluntary insurance is not permitted once the month in which the regular retirement age is reached has passed for a bindingly granted full old-age pension.

### I lost my Versicherungsnummernachweis — how do I get a replacement?

Deutsche Rentenversicherung: 'Bei Namensänderungen oder bei Verlust können Sie bei uns oder bei der zuständigen Krankenkasse einen neuen Ausweis beantragen.' Request a new certificate from DRV or from your Krankenkasse.
