## Steps

### 1. Determine What You Need to Update

- Different update types have different processes and costs
- Address and document refresh: available online via myAadhaar
- Name, date of birth, gender, mobile number, email: require in-person visit (mobile cannot be updated online — OTP needs the existing registered number)
- Biometrics: require in-person visit

> **Tip:** UIDAI recommends updating identity and address documents at least once every 10 years from the date of Aadhaar generation. Biometrics are age-triggered: a Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) is required when the holder turns 5 and again when they turn 15, free during the 5-7 and 15-17 windows.

### 2. Update via myAadhaar Portal (Online)

- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
- Log in with your 12-digit Aadhaar number and OTP
- Select 'Update Aadhaar' → choose the field
- Upload supporting documents (max 2 MB, PDF/JPEG)
- For address updates without documents, use the Address Validation Letter method

> **If this fails:** The portal requires OTP on your registered mobile. If that number is no longer active, you must visit an enrollment center in person.

_Useful phrases:_
- "मुझे अपना आधार पता अपडेट करना है" (mujhe apna aadhaar pataa update karna hai) — I need to update my Aadhaar address. — use when Calling UIDAI helpline (1947) or visiting an enrollment center

### 3. Visit an Aadhaar Enrollment Center (In-Person)

- Find your nearest center at uidai.gov.in or book an appointment on myAadhaar
- Bring your Aadhaar card and supporting documents (originals + copies)
- Fill out the Aadhaar Update/Correction Form
- Submit biometrics (fingerprints, iris scan, photograph)
- Collect your Update Request Number (URN) receipt

> **If this fails:** Centers can be very crowded. Book online to avoid waits. Arrive before 10 AM. Waits of 1-2 hours are common.

_Useful phrases:_
- "मुझे आधार में सुधार करवाना है" (mujhe aadhaar mein sudhaar karvaana hai) — I need to get a correction done in my Aadhaar. — use when Arriving at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrollment center

### 4. Track Your Update and Download Updated Aadhaar

- Track at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → 'Check Aadhaar Update Status'
- Per UIDAI: 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days; the full processing window extends up to 90 days
- Once approved, download your updated eAadhaar (PDF with digital signature)
- The eAadhaar is legally valid and accepted everywhere

> **Tip:** Download the mAadhaar app to carry a digital copy on your phone with QR code and Virtual ID for privacy.

## FAQ

### Which Aadhaar updates can I do online?

You can update your address online at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in (INR 50 incl. GST per UIDAI). Document updates (proof-of-identity / proof-of-address refresh) are also available online and are currently waived through 14 June 2026. For name, date of birth, gender, mobile number, and email changes, you must visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre in person — mobile number cannot be updated online because OTP is sent to the existing registered number. Biometric updates (fingerprints, iris, photograph) also require an in-person visit.

### My mobile number linked to Aadhaar is no longer active. How do I update it?

Mobile number updates can only be done in person at an Aadhaar enrollment center or Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Bring your Aadhaar card and one identity proof. Your biometrics (fingerprint or iris) will be used to verify your identity since OTP verification isn't possible without the old number. The process takes about 15-20 minutes.

### How long does an Aadhaar update take to reflect?

Per UIDAI: 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days, with the full processing window extending up to 90 days. The same window applies to both online and in-person submissions. You will receive an SMS confirmation once the update is processed. Check the status on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in using your Update Request Number (URN). Download a fresh eAadhaar after the update is complete.

## Local tips

- Go before 11am to avoid long queues at enrollment centers — most people arrive after lunch
- Ask for a printout of your acknowledgment slip — some centers don't offer it by default
- If you're updating your address online, keep your registered mobile nearby — OTP expires in 10 minutes
