## Steps

### 1. Apply Online via Passport Seva Portal

- Select 'Re-issue of Passport'
- Fill in personal details (must match Aadhaar exactly)
- Upload photograph and signature
- Choose 36-page or 60-page booklet

> **Tip:** Use the mPassport Seva app for a smoother experience — fill form, upload docs, book appointments from your phone.

> **If this fails:** Name must match Aadhaar exactly. Even small discrepancies cause delays. Update Aadhaar first if there's a mismatch.

### 2. Pay the Fee and Book an Appointment

- Pay online via UPI, net banking, or card
- Book at nearest PSK or POPSK
- PSK: Full-service centre — handles all passport service types
- POPSK: Operates inside India Post offices — wider geographic coverage, particularly in smaller towns

> **Tip:** Book earliest available slot — mornings are less crowded. Carry printout of appointment confirmation.

_Useful phrases:_
- "मुझे अपना पासपोर्ट नवीनीकरण करवाना है" (mujhe apna passport naveeneekaran karvaana hai) — I need to get my passport renewed. — use when Arriving at the PSK reception counter

### 3. Visit the Passport Seva Kendra

- Arrive 15 minutes early with originals and self-attested copies
- Counter A — document verification
- Counter B — biometrics (fingerprints and photo)
- Counter C — final verification
- Total visit: 1-2 hours

> **If this fails:** Missing documents or mismatches cause rejection. Most common: Aadhaar address mismatch, missing copies, non-compliant photos.

### 4. Track and Receive Your New Passport

- Track on Passport Seva portal or mPassport Seva app
- Delivered via India Post Speed Post — someone must sign

> **Tip:** Save passport in DigiLocker for a legally accepted digital copy.

_Useful phrases:_
- "मेरा पासपोर्ट स्पीड पोस्ट से आना चाहिए था" (mera passport speed post se aana chaahiye tha) — My passport was supposed to arrive by Speed Post. — use when Checking at your local post office if delivery was missed

## FAQ

### What is the difference between normal and tatkal passport renewal?

Per the MEA Application Form Instruction Booklet, normal processing dispatches the passport on the third working day after submission in straightforward cases (no police verification required); cases needing pre-police-verification or involving complexity take approximately 30 days. Tatkaal (express) is dispatched within 1 working day after submission and post police verification is conducted in all Tatkaal cases. Tatkaal costs INR 3500-4000 (INR 1500-2000 application fee plus INR 2000 Tatkaal premium). Tatkaal does NOT require any proof of urgency — the gazetted-officer / MP / MLA Verification Certificate (Annexure F) applies to lost or damaged passport replacement, not to Tatkaal generally.

### Is police verification required for passport renewal?

For simple renewals (no change in name, address, or appearance), police verification is usually not required. If you're changing your address to a different police station jurisdiction, or if your name has changed, police verification will be triggered. The officer visits your residence — ensure someone is home. Police verification typically adds 1-2 weeks to the total processing time.

### Can I renew my passport if it hasn't expired yet?

Yes — Passport Seva calls this re-issue rather than renewal. Per the MEA booklet, re-issue may be filed any time before expiry and up to 3 years after expiry. Many travellers apply when they have less than 6 months validity remaining because many countries require at least 6 months validity for entry. Your new passport is issued with a fresh 10-year validity from the date of issue.
