Getting a PPS Number (Personal Public Service Number) in Ireland
Document Checklist
Evidence of identity
Irish citizen born in Ireland: Current Irish passport, OR current Irish/UK driving licence or learner permit, OR birth certificate where the General Register Office records cannot verify your details
Irish citizen born in Northern Ireland or UK: Current passport, OR birth certificate together with a current driving licence or learner permit
Naturalised Irish citizen: Current Irish passport, OR Certificate of Naturalisation bearing your photograph
Irish citizen via Foreign Birth Registration: Current Irish passport, OR Foreign Birth Registration Certificate together with a driving licence or learner permit
EU/EEA citizen (non-Irish, non-UK): Current passport, OR national identity card
Non-EU/EEA citizen: Current passport, OR 1951 travel document
The accepted document depends on your citizenship class. Supporting documents that may be accepted in addition include a medical card, student card, credit or debit card with a statement, or Free Travel Pass. Bring originals to the appointment — uploaded copies alone are not sufficient at the identity-verification step.
Evidence of address
Required: A document showing your name and address, not older than 3 months
Accepted: Utility bills, bank statements, tenancy or lease agreements, or official government department letters
If you are staying with friends or relatives and have no bill in your own name, you can use an original household bill plus a written note from the bill holder confirming you live there — the note may be written on the bill itself. A written confirmation from a hotel or hostel administrator, school principal, or accommodation owner is also accepted.
