Document Checklist
Valid passport
Pasaporte vigente
Required: Original; must be current
Used as: Primary identificación oficial vigente at the branch counter
The branch officer inspects the passport as the primary identity document. Photocopies are not accepted in place of the original.
Tarjeta de Residente Temporal or Tarjeta de Residente Permanente
Documento migratorio vigente
Issued by: Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM)
Required: Original residency card; FMM tourist permit is not accepted
A residente temporal card is valid 180 days to 4 years; the residente permanente card has no expiry. The Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) tourist permit is in most cases not accepted by the active trio for a standard deposit account.
Clave Única de Registro de Población
CURP
Where to get: Generated automatically when INM grants residency; otherwise via the gob.mx CURP portal
Required: Printed CURP record or readable from the residency card
The CURP is the unique population registry code. For foreign newcomers it is in practice always requested by the bank even though it is not formally a federal account-opening requirement.
Proof of address
Comprobante de domicilio
Accepted documents: Utility bill (electricity, gas, water, landline, cable, or internet) or a bank statement in the customer's name
Recency rule: Not older than three months
This is the most frequently failed item for newcomers, who often do not yet have a utility bill in their own name. Mitigation: a notarised lease (contrato de arrendamiento) paired with a co-resident utility bill, or a constancia de domicilio issued by the local authority. Practice varies by branch.
Registro Federal de Contribuyentes
RFC
Issued by: Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT)
Required for: Cuenta de captación tradicional, cuenta de nómina, and most debit-card-linked products at the active trio
RFC inscripción for a foreign resident is free at SAT and is a separate trámite. A cuenta básica at a lower nivel can sometimes be opened with the commitment to add RFC later; the bank may keep the account at a reduced tier until RFC is provided.
