Open a Spanish Resident Bank Account at Santander, CaixaBank, or Bankinter
Document Checklist
DNI (Spanish national ID)
Documento Nacional de Identidad
Accepted at Santander resident path: DNI, TIE o pasaporte
Required: Original; must be valid
Spanish nationals present the DNI for any resident-account flow at all three banks. Spanish nationals living outside Spain may use the DNI on Santander's non-resident path (Si eres español, pero vives fuera, podrás utilizar tu DNI).
NIE (foreigner ID number)
Número de Identidad de Extranjero
Required for: Foreign tax residents in Spain at any of the three banks
Required: Original NIE letter or NIE printed on a TIE card
Foreign tax residents in Spain identify with the NIE per Santander's non-resident page (tienes que identificar con el NIE). The NIE is the structural prerequisite for every resident-account flow at the three banks. If you do not yet hold a NIE, complete that step first — see the sister NIE guide.
TIE (physical residence card)
Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero
Accepted at Santander resident path: DNI, TIE o pasaporte
Required for: Non-EU residents post-residence permit
Non-EU residents who already hold a residence permit present the TIE; this is the physical card that carries the NIE on its face. EU residents in Spain identify instead with the certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión Europea plus pasaporte per Santander's non-resident path.
Passport
Pasaporte
Accepted at Santander non-resident path: Pasaporte en vigor (current passport)
Required: Original; must be in vigor (valid)
Santander's Cuenta Online con pasaporte path accepts a current passport from applicants who reside in 26 named countries (see nationalities_note). The same path treats the certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión Europea plus pasaporte as the EU-citizen-in-Spain combination.
Proof of address
Comprobante de domicilio
Where to get: Volante de empadronamiento from your municipality's Ayuntamiento
Required: Original or printed copy
Spanish anti-money-laundering practice treats a comprobante de domicilio as standard for opening a current account, even where the bank's own pages do not enumerate it. The canonical newcomer source is the volante de empadronamiento issued by your Ayuntamiento — see the sister padrón guide.
