Thai Driving Licence — 5-Year Personal, 2-Year Temporary, and Foreign-Licence Conversion
Document Checklist
หนังสือเดินทาง (Nangsue Doen Thang — Passport)
Original passport with valid long-term visa
Required pages: Bio page, current visa page, latest entry stamp; signed photocopies of each
Visa classes accepted: Non-Immigrant B, O, O-A, O-X, Education (Non-ED), LTR, DTV, Thailand Privilege, Smart Visa
Visa class rejected: Tourist visa (TR) — applicant cannot apply for a Thai driving licence
Bring the original passport and signed photocopies; the DLT counter retains the photocopies.
ใบรับรองถิ่นที่อยู่ (Bai Rap Rong Thin Thi Yu — Residence Certificate)
Residence certificate
Accepted forms: Residence Certificate (TM.16) from Thai Immigration; embassy affidavit of residence; or Yellow House Book (ทะเบียนบ้าน — Thabian Ban) entry
Validity: Dated within 30 days of the DLT visit
Not accepted: Work permit alone — even if it carries the applicant's address
The DLT's residence-proof rule excludes work permits explicitly. If your employer offered to use the work-permit address as proof, plan instead to visit Thai Immigration for the TM.16.
ใบรับรองแพทย์ (Bai Rap Rong Phaet — Medical Certificate)
Thai medical certificate
Issuer: Any Thai clinic or hospital
Content: Confirms applicant is physically and mentally fit to drive
Validity: 30 days from issue
Walk-in clinics near foreigner-favoured DLT branches routinely issue the certificate within an hour.
ใบรับรอง e-Learning (Bai Rap Rong e-Learning — e-Learning Certificate)
DLT e-learning certificate
Source: dlt-elearning.com after completing the mandatory module
Module length: About four hours of video for first-time applicants; about one hour for renewal applicants whose licence is unexpired or under one year expired; about two hours for renewals over one year expired
Validity: 180 days from completion before counter use
Print or download the certificate; the counter clerk checks the QR code at the appointment.
แบบคำขอ (Baeb Kham Kho — Application Form)
Completed DLT application form
Where to obtain: DLT branch counter on the day of the appointment; counter staff routinely provide it on request
The form is filled in at the counter; bring a pen and your passport details.
รูปถ่าย (Rup Thai — Photo)
Passport-size photos
Format: 1-inch passport-size, 2–3 copies
Photo studios near DLT branches print to the correct format on request.
ใบขับขี่ต่างประเทศ (Bai Khap Khi Tang Prathet — Foreign Driving Licence)
Valid foreign driving licence (conversion route only)
Type accepted: Full licence (not provisional, learner, or probationary)
Remaining validity: At least 6 months on the foreign licence at the time of the DLT visit
Original plus photocopy: Bring both; the DLT counter retains a photocopy and may return the original
An expired foreign licence does not qualify for the conversion route.
คำแปลรับรอง (Kham Plae Rap Rong — Certified Translation)
Certified Thai translation of foreign licence (conversion route only)
Required by: Most DLT branches, for all foreign licences regardless of source language
Translator: Approved translator; many translation agencies serve foreigner-favoured DLT branches
Arrange the translation before the DLT appointment; same-day to two-business-day turnaround is typical.
หนังสือรับรองจากสถานทูต (Nangsue Rap Rong Chak Sathan Thut — Embassy Verification Letter)
Embassy verification letter (conversion route, country-dependent)
Required for licences issued by: United States, Germany, Japan, France, Russia, China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar
Waived for licences issued by: United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Scandinavian countries
Processing time: Typically 3–10 business days depending on embassy
Confirm the current requirement directly with your home embassy in Thailand — embassy policy is occasionally updated.
