Getting a Driver's License in California
Document Checklist
Proof of identity
Purpose: Establishes date of birth and true full legal name
Examples named by the California DMV: A valid U.S. passport, a certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, or a valid Permanent Resident Card
Required for both REAL ID and standard cards. The examples are the California DMV's own and are not exhaustive.
Proof of Social Security number
How it is provided: The Social Security number is entered on the application
Exceptions: Exceptions may apply; AB 60 applicants who cannot prove lawful presence follow a separate path
Issued by the federal Social Security Administration.
Two different proofs of California residency
Requirement: Two different documents showing your first and last name and mailing address
Examples named by the California DMV: Mortgage bill, utility bill, cell phone bill, vehicle registration card, or bank statement
**Required:** REAL ID needs two different residency documents; arriving with only one will block REAL ID issuance.
Legal full name document
When required: If your name does not match across your identity, Social Security, and residency documents
Examples: Marriage certificate or name-change court record
Only needed to reconcile a name mismatch.
Previous driver's license (new residents)
Who brings it: A new resident who already holds a valid license from a previous state or country
Effect: A valid previous-state or U.S.-territory license normally waives the drive test if presented; the vision and knowledge tests still apply
A foreign-only license generally still requires the behind-the-wheel drive test.
