Getting a Social Security Number (AMKA) in Greece
Document Checklist
διαβατήριο
Passport or equivalent identity document
Required: Original passport, or an expatriate ID card / ID card equivalent to a Greek ID card
Cost: Free
For most third-country new arrivals this means a valid passport. Name fields for foreign citizens are recorded in Latin characters.
Family-status certificate (officially translated into Greek)
When needed: Required in place of an ID card or passport when those are not available; also the document that evidences father's and mother's names
Required: Must be officially translated into Greek
Father's name and mother's name are mandatory registration fields and are often absent from a foreign passport — the family-status certificate is what carries them.
Birth certificate (minors born in Greece)
When needed: Required for an underage person born in Greece
ΑΦΜ
Greek tax number (AFM) and a Greek postal address
Why: The registration form records a Greek postal address; in practice you hold an AFM before registering for AMKA
The official register does not list the AFM as a documentary line-item — treat AFM-first as a practical ordering. See the separate AFM guide.
