   Confirm Whether You Need to Register

   1. Check your visa category — Student (S), Employment (E), Medical (M), Missionary (Mx) over 180 days require registration
   2. Note your arrival date — the 14-day clock starts from arrival in India
   3. Identify your jurisdictional FRRO from the Bureau of Immigration list (boi.gov.in)

   ⚠️ Watch out: If you are unsure whether your visa requires registration, contact the jurisdictional FRRO before the 14-day deadline — late registration attracts a penalty.

   Gather Documents and Take a Photograph

   1. Scan passport, visa, entry stamp, and any prior endorsements
   2. Get a recent passport-size colour photograph in the format specified on e-FRRO
   3. Prepare the visa-category supporting letter — employment contract, admission letter, hospital letter, sponsoring-organisation letter
   4. Have proof of residence in India ready (rental agreement, host letter, hostel allotment)

   Create an e-FRRO User Account

   1. Open the e-FRRO portal at indianfrro.gov.in and choose Register
   2. Use a personal email address and a valid Indian mobile number — both are required for OTP and alerts
   3. Verify the OTP sent to the mobile, set a password, and complete the profile

   💡 Tip: Use your own email and Indian mobile number — sharing credentials risks data privacy and the rejection of subsequent applications.

   File the Registration Application Online

   1. From the dashboard, select Registration as the service and your visa category
   2. Fill in personal, passport, visa, and Indian-address details
   3. Upload the photograph and all supporting documents in the required formats
   4. Submit and download the application receipt for your records

   ⚠️ Watch out: Per the Bureau of Immigration, the application is not successfully submitted unless documents and photograph upload successfully. Re-upload until each item shows the green confirmation in the portal.

   Pay Any Applicable Fee

   1. Wait for the e-FRRO intimation by email and SMS — it states whether a fee applies and how much
   2. Pay through the e-FRRO bank payment gateway only — do not use third-party payment links
   3. Save the payment receipt

   💡 Tip: If the email asks for an unexpected fee or routes you off the e-FRRO portal, treat it as a phishing attempt. Pay only on the indianfrro.gov.in domain.

   Attend an Interview If Called

   1. Per the Bureau of Immigration, you only need to visit the FRRO if specifically called upon
   2. If an interview is scheduled, the date, time, and FRRO office are sent via email and SMS
   3. Carry the original passport, visa, photograph, and the application receipt

   Receive the Registration Certificate and Residential Permit

   1. Per the Bureau of Immigration, a Residential Permit is issued at registration and is valid only for the period of stay in the visa
   2. Download or collect the Registration Certificate (RC) and Residential Permit (RP) from e-FRRO
   3. Carry the RP together with your passport during your stay in India

   ⚠️ Watch out: If the RC or RP is not issued after the application is approved, raise a query through the e-FRRO portal grievance section. Do not travel domestically without the RP.
