FRRO Registration for Foreign Nationals in India
Document Checklist
Passport
Required: Original; first and last pages plus all pages with India visa, entry stamps and prior FRRO endorsements
Cost: Free (existing document)
All visa pages and entry-stamp pages must be scanned and uploaded with the e-FRRO application.
Indian visa
Required: Visa sticker or e-Visa printout showing visa type, validity and number of entries
Cost: Free (existing document)
Registration applies to long-stay categories — Student (S), Employment (E), Medical (M), Missionary (Mx) — when validity exceeds 180 days. Other long-stay categories may require registration; check with the jurisdictional FRRO.
Proof of residence in India
Required: Rental agreement, hotel booking, host letter with local ID, or institution accommodation letter
Cost: Free or nominal (existing document)
The address must fall within the jurisdiction of the FRRO where you register. The Residential Permit issued at registration is tied to this address.
Recent photograph
Required: Recent passport-size colour photograph in the format specified on e-FRRO
Cost: Nominal at any photo studio
The application is not accepted until the photograph and documents are uploaded successfully.
Visa-category supporting document
Required: Employment contract (E visa); admission/bonafide letter (S visa); hospital and treatment letter (M visa); sponsoring organisation letter (Mx visa)
Cost: Free (issued by employer/institution)
The supporting document confirms the activity that justifies your long-term visa. e-FRRO lists category-specific document requirements at the start of the form.
