Additional Items
- Selfie or photo with KITAS for Mobile JKN identity verification โ taken in the app, not uploaded separately
- PPU (Pekerja Penerima Upah / Wage-Earning Worker) path: if you are employed by an Indonesian company, your employer registers you through SIPP at sipp.bpjs-kesehatan.go.id. The employer remits monthly contributions; the employee provides KITAS, passport, and personal data only.
- PPU contribution rate is 5% of monthly salary, split as 4% paid by the employer and 1% deducted from the employee's pay (Perpres No. 82 Tahun 2018, salary cap and floor apply per regulation)
- PPU activation timing is employer-driven through SIPP; BPJS Kesehatan does not publish a fixed activation SLA for the employer-batched cycle
- BPJS Kesehatan is in transition to a single-class KRIS (Kelas Rawat Inap Standar) standard under Perpres No. 59 Tahun 2024, with the consolidated post-KRIS rate schedule due to be set no later than 1 July 2025. Class 1, 2, and 3 rates published here reflect the current schedule; verify with BPJS for any post-transition rate changes.
- Late-payment recovery cap: on reactivation after a lapse, BPJS Kesehatan collects up to 24 months of arrears under Perpres No. 82 Tahun 2018
Step-by-Step
- 1
Confirm Eligibility and Choose a Path
Expat Resident- Verify your KITAS has been issued for at least 6 months, or that you have worked in Indonesia for at least 6 months โ this is the mandate trigger under Perpres No. 82 Tahun 2018 Pasal 6
- Choose your enrollment path: PPU (Pekerja Penerima Upah) if you are an employee of an Indonesian company โ your employer registers you through SIPP and you provide only KITAS, passport, and personal data; PBPU (Pekerja Bukan Penerima Upah) if you are self-paying โ you register yourself on Mobile JKN
- PPU contribution is 5% of salary (4% paid by employer, 1% deducted from your pay); PBPU contribution is the flat Class 1, 2, or 3 monthly amount you choose at registration
๐ก Tip: Most foreign professionals on a work-tied KITAS are enrolled through PPU by their sponsoring company. Self-registration on PBPU applies if you are self-employed in Indonesia, on a non-work KITAS, or your employer has not yet registered you.
- 2
Gather Your Documents
- Pull together your KITAS or KITAP card, passport (bio-data page), and your KK number if enrolling family members
- Confirm an active Indonesian mobile phone number for OTP verification and an active email address for the participant agreement and Virtual Account delivery
- If you plan to enable auto-debit, have a passbook or account number ready from BNI, BRI, BTN, Mandiri, or BCA
โ ๏ธ Watch out: Foreign residents without a KK number cannot complete the Mobile JKN PBPU self-registration form. The fallback is in-person registration at a BPJS Kesehatan Kantor Cabang.
- 3
Register on Mobile JKN (PBPU Path)
Mobile JKN
Expat ResidentIf you are self-paying (PBPU). PPU employees skip to step 6.
- Install the Mobile JKN application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store
- Tap Daftar, then Pendaftaran Peserta Baru โ read the terms and conditions, then enter your KK number and the CAPTCHA
- Complete the registration form with your personal details and KITAS information
- Take the in-app selfie or photo with your KITAS for identity verification when prompted
๐ฌ Say:
Saya mau daftar BPJS Kesehatan jalur PBPU.
sah-yah mow daf-tar bay-pay-jay-ess kay-say-ha-tan ja-loor pay-bay-pay-oo
"I would like to register for BPJS Kesehatan on the self-payer (PBPU) path."
๐ Use when: Asking at a Kantor Cabang counter if the app path does not work for you
- 4
Select Your Inpatient Ward Class
Expat ResidentPBPU path only
- Choose Class 1 (Rp 150,000 per person per month), Class 2 (Rp 100,000), or Class 3 (Rp 35,000 net out-of-pocket after government subsidy)
- The class determines the inpatient room standard if you are hospitalized โ Class 1 is single occupancy, Class 2 is dual occupancy, Class 3 is multi-occupancy
- Mobile JKN automatically calculates the total monthly contribution across all enrolled family members at the chosen class
๐ก Tip: BPJS Kesehatan is in transition to a single-class KRIS standard under Perpres No. 59 Tahun 2024 (target effective 1 July 2025). The Class 1, 2, and 3 rates above reflect the current schedule under Perpres No. 59 Tahun 2024; verify with BPJS Kesehatan for any post-transition rate changes before relying on the figure.
- 5
Verify Identity and Receive Your Virtual Account
Expat ResidentPBPU path only
- Enter your active mobile phone number โ Mobile JKN sends an OTP by SMS โ and enter the OTP back in the app
- Enter your active email address; review and approve the participant agreement
- BPJS Kesehatan emails the Virtual Account (VA) number that you will use to pay your first contribution
โ ๏ธ Watch out: If the OTP does not arrive, check whether the Indonesian SIM is registered to the same name as on the KITAS. Mobile JKN rejects mismatched ownership in some flows.
- 6
Wait 14 Calendar Days, Then Pay the First Contribution
Expat ResidentPBPU path only
- From the registration date, count 14 calendar days โ this is the waiting period set by Perpres No. 82 Tahun 2018 Pasal 15. Coverage is not active during this window and the Virtual Account does not yet accept the payment
- On day 15 or later, transfer the first month's contribution to the Virtual Account via mobile banking, ATM, retail outlet, or auto-debit through one of BNI, BRI, BTN, Mandiri, or BCA
- Coverage activates immediately on successful payment
๐ก Tip: Coverage activates 14 calendar days after registration. Payments completed before 12:00 WIB on the activation day count for that day's coverage; payments completed after 12:00 WIB count for the next day. If you have a non-emergency medical appointment in mind, schedule the Virtual Account payment within the activation window so the card is live before the visit.
- 7
Provide KITAS and Personal Data to Employer HR (PPU Path)
Expat ResidentIf you are an employee of an Indonesian company
- Submit your KITAS or KITAP card, passport, and personal data to your Indonesian employer's HR team
- The employer files your participant data through SIPP (Sistem Informasi Pelaporan Iuran) at sipp.bpjs-kesehatan.go.id and remits the monthly contribution
- You receive your digital KIS (Kartu Indonesia Sehat) through Mobile JKN once the employer-side registration is processed
๐ก Tip: PPU activation timing is driven by the employer's monthly SIPP cycle. BPJS Kesehatan does not publish a fixed activation SLA for the employer-batched flow โ confirm with your HR when the digital KIS becomes visible in Mobile JKN.
What Could Go Wrong
Register on Mobile JKN: Mobile JKN registration form requires a KK number that a foreign resident may not have
Recovery: If you cannot provide a KK number, register at a BPJS Kesehatan Kantor Cabang branch office in person. Bring KITAS, passport, and the same supporting items the app would request.
Pay the first contribution: First-month payment attempted before the 14-day waiting period ends
Recovery: The Virtual Account does not accept the payment until day 15. Wait out the window and pay on day 15 or later. If the payment is made after 12:00 WIB on the activation day, BPJS Kesehatan counts it as the next day.

FAQ
Documents
Do I have to enroll in BPJS Kesehatan as a foreigner?
Yes, if you have worked in Indonesia for at least 6 months. Perpres No. 82 Tahun 2018 Pasal 6 defines a Peserta Jaminan Kesehatan as 'every person, including foreigners who have worked at least 6 months in Indonesia, who has paid the contribution.' The 6-month working threshold is the statutory mandate trigger for foreign residents.
Costs
What's the difference between Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3?
The class determines the inpatient room standard if you are hospitalized and the monthly PBPU contribution: Rp 150,000 for Class 1, Rp 100,000 for Class 2, and Rp 35,000 net for Class 3 (Rp 42,000 gross less a Rp 7,000 government subsidy under Perpres No. 59 Tahun 2024). The class is selected at registration on Mobile JKN.
General
Can I keep private health insurance instead?
Private insurance does not exempt a foreign resident from the JKN participation requirement under Perpres No. 82 Tahun 2018. Many foreign professionals carry both โ BPJS Kesehatan as the mandatory base coverage and a private policy as a top-up for hospital choice or international cover.
What happens if I miss payments?
Coverage suspends after the missed-payment window. On reactivation, BPJS Kesehatan collects up to 24 months of arrears under Perpres No. 82 Tahun 2018 โ the 24-month figure is a cap on arrears recovery, not a waiver of the missed period.
After This Process
