Exchanging a foreign driving licence in Ireland
Document Checklist
Current or most recent foreign driving licence
Required for: EU/EEA or recognised-state exchange
Submission: For online applications, posted to the NDLS after the form is completed
The original licence must be surrendered. Failure to submit it results in the application being rejected.
Eyesight report form
Validity: Fully completed and dated within one month
When required: Required when exchanging a licence issued by a recognised state, or otherwise if required in your case
Medical report form
Validity: Fully completed and dated within one month
When required: If required in your case
Proof of address
Validity: Dated within the last six months
When required: If your current address differs from the address held by the Department of Social Protection when the Public Services Card was applied for
Proof of normal residence in Ireland
When required: If you are not an EU or EEA citizen
Normal residence means usually living in Ireland for at least 185 days in each calendar year because of personal and occupational ties.
Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC)
When required: For commercial categories, if applicable
Public Services Card and verified MyGovID account
Required for: Online applications only
Certified English translation of the foreign licence
When required: Where the original licence is not in English
