Step-by-Step

   Book a Termin via the city's portal

   1. Open your city's Bürgerservice or Kundenzentrum portal and search for 'Anmeldung einer Wohnung' or the equivalent Dienstleistung name.
   2. Select the Standort and time slot that work for you. In Köln, you can pick any of the nine Kundenzentrum Standorte regardless of Stadtbezirk.
   3. Confirm and note the Termin reference for the appointment day.

   💡 Tip: Köln publishes that many service categories accept walk-ins at the Kundenzentrum Infotheke, though for Anmeldung specifically the Termin pathway is preferred. Düsseldorf and Essen publish their own walk-in vs Termin conventions on their respective portals.

   Get Documents Translated If Required

   1. Find a court-sworn translator (beglaubigter Übersetzer) for any document the Meldebehörde requires in German
   2. Marriage certificates, birth certificates, and name-change documents are the typical translation candidates

   Attend the appointment at your city's Meldebehörde

   1. Bring the three baseline documents — Anmeldeformular completed in advance, original Passport or Personalausweis, and the original Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your landlord.
   2. Arrive a few minutes early; the appointment itself typically takes 10-20 minutes at the counter once the clerk calls your number.
   3. If you are registering multiple people moving into the same dwelling on the same date, the federal frame permits a single joint Anmeldeformular signed by one authorised person — bring documents for everyone.

   Receive the Anmeldebestätigung

   Anmeldebestätigung

   1. The clerk reviews the documents, enters the data into the register, has the registrant sign the form, prints and stamps the Anmeldebestätigung, and hands it over
   2. The Anmeldebestätigung is a single A4 sheet bearing the registrant's name, the registered address, the date of registration, and the official stamp of the Meldebehörde
   3. Photograph or scan the document immediately on receipt and store the original carefully — some downstream offices (particularly bank branches) accept only the original or a certified copy
   4. The Steuer-IdNr letter from the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern arrives by post at the registered address typically within two to four weeks under § 139b of the Abgabenordnung

   💡 Tip: The Anmeldebestätigung is the residency-proof artefact accepted by banks, employers, statutory health insurers, mobile-network operators, and the Ausländerbehörde for non-EU/EEA nationals.

   Register at the State Foreigners' Authority

   1. After the Anmeldung, non-EU/EEA nationals must register at the state Ausländerbehörde to apply for or register an Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit)
   2. Bring the Anmeldebestätigung, passport, visa, employment contract or other proof of stay purpose, and any prior Aufenthaltstitel
   3. The Ausländerbehörde appointment system, location, and required documents all sit outside the BMG framework and operate under the Aufenthaltsgesetz (the federal Residence Act)
   4. EU and EEA citizens do not need this step — the Anmeldung alone is sufficient for residency purposes

   Identify your city's Meldebehörde and its brand name

   1. Determine which NRW city you have moved into — Anmeldung is handled at the Meldebehörde of your city of move-in.
   2. Look up the local brand: Köln Kundenzentrum, Düsseldorf Bürgerbüro (Bürgerservice), Essen Bürgeramt, Dortmund Bürgerdienste. Other NRW Gemeinden vary.
   3. Bookmark the city's portal entry point: stadt-koeln.de for Köln, service.duesseldorf.de for Düsseldorf, essen.de for Essen.

   💡 Tip: The Bundesland is Nordrhein-Westfalen; the state aggregator is at land.nrw and the state-interior ministry (Ministerium des Innern des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen) is at im.nrw. Neither is an Anmeldung entry surface — they are state-policy and state-statute hubs, not local Meldebehörden.

   Get supporting documents translated if needed

   2. Photograph or scan the Anmeldebestätigung immediately — banks, employers, statutory health insurers and Ausländerbehörden frequently require the original document.
   3. The federal-baseline Steuerliche Identifikationsnummer letter from the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern arrives by post at your registered address typically within two to four weeks.
